Shih Tzus - Health Issues

Shih Tzus are prone to eye injuries and to ear infections. Regular grooming and veterinary check-ups are sure to prevent possible problems. Other diseases typical of the breed are hip dysplasia, thyroid abnormalities, renal dysplasia, and liver shunt. Make sure the breeding line has been screened for the above-mentioned diseases and conditions.

Shih Tzus - Exercise Needs

The Shih Tzu is an active dog and daily walks are essential to keep the dog fit and satisfied. Shih Tzus are prone to obesity, if their owner tends to overfeed it and does not encourage the pet to go out.

Shih Tzus - Breed History

Shih Tzus are known to have descended from Temple dogs in Tibet. This is believed to have been an exclusive group of dogs bred by Buddhist monks. The Shih Tzu means Lion Dog. The Shih Tzu had a status of the holy dog. In Tibet, the Shih Tzu dogs were kept in temples as sacred dogs.

In 1850, the monks sent some of their temple dogs to Manchu Emperors in Peking. The Chinese called these dogs Tibetan Shih Tzu Kou, or Tibetan Lion Dog. The Shih Tzu became a favorite of the Imperial Chinese Court. In 1930, the first Shih Tzus were imported to England. The Shih Tzu breed got recognition in Britain in 1946. The AKC recognized the breed in 1969. Shih Tzus are both beautiful show dogs and wonderful companions.
