The large eyes are wide-set; the ears are pendant and blend into the coat. The bite should be level or undershot. The body of these dogs is slightly longer than height at the shoulders. Show quality dogs should not exceed 11 inches in height.

The characteristic feature of this breed is its abundant double coat with wooly undercoat. The hair above the nose grows upwards and creates a chrysanthemum look. The head is rounded and profuse moustache and beard add to the roundness. The imperial shih tzu rescues will have a photo of any available dog.
